They say, ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.’ Well, whoever ‘They’ are, they’re wrong. This 10 year old lab/chow mix, learned how to go sledding last year. She actually pulls her own sled up the hill and gets in waiting for her push off. She goes down the hill and then brings it back up for her next run. This dog has never been accused of being the sharpest tool in the shed but you don’t see too many dogs do that.
People like to believe that when a person hits a certain age, they are set in their ways and they can’t change. Well, that may be true about some things. If a person is eighty years old and doesn’t like broccoli, it stands to reason that they probably never will. But there is never an age where it is too late to turn to the Lord and receive His free gift of eternal life.
Last year, a friend of mine named Valerie, led a person to faith in Christ who was a hundred years old. This person had steadfastly refused to acknowledge his need for the Lord’s forgiveness and mercy. He thought for sure he was good enough to get into heaven on his own merits, but he finally one day, opened his heart and asked the Lord to come into his life and be his Lord and savior.
None of us are guaranteed another minute of breath in this life. We have no way of knowing when our number will be up. It is a foolish thing to gamble with our eternal soul with the belief that we can make a decision to follow Christ- some day. Now is the right time! Today is the day of salvation.
Put your faith in Jesus. Perhaps you think that you are too set in your ways to follow Jesus; you are to old and you have missed your chance- nonsense! You have breath today, so His promise is still for you, “Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord (Jesus) SHALL be saved.”
Maybe you have been a nosey gossip all your life. Perhaps you have been a mean, stingy, self-centered, arrogant, mean spirited, ogre all your life? Maybe you can think of a hundred reasons why you don’t deserve to be saved, but I can think of one reason why you can. It is the cross of Jesus; He already died for those sins.
Perhaps you think you are a kind, decent, law abiding, good citizen, and that your good outweighs your bad. Entry into heaven is not about how ‘good’ you are. This is a common misconception and a lie from hell. We go to heaven, based solely on our relationship to the Lord of heaven. It is not about how good we are. It is based on whether or not we have allowed the blood of Jesus, which was shed on the cross, to be applied on our account. We may consider ourselves 'good' compared to some but God guages 'goodness' by the standard of heaven- absolute perfection. By that measure, we all come up short. We all need Jesus to make up the difference.
