Jesus VS ‘Duct Tape’
Duct tape, teaching spiritual lessons! Who’d of thunk it?! But the thought occurred to me the other day when I heard someone talking about how duct tape was their ‘SAVIOR’. That is an interesting thought. What could he have meant by that I wonder? Well, it was obvious that it was not a reference to his dependence on this marvelous product for the saving of his soul. He had a situation that required an emergency repair and the tape came in handy as it had many times before.
Some people see Jesus as a kind of ‘duct tape’. They get into jams that need emergency repair and they throw up a desperate prayer to have ‘Jesus fix it’. They need a quick fix and they need it now! They may not really want to know Jesus. They are happy to reach out for him if they need him, but they don’t really want to submit to him as their Lord. Jesus is kinda handy to have around but that is as far as their relationship with him goes.
Duct tape has an amazing number of diverse and incredibly creative uses. I have seen pictures of it being used to make clothes, sculptures, and replicas of other things. Who can possibly count the number or variety of repairs that have been made with duct tape over the years?
Jesus is much better than duct tape though! He has changed, repaired, restored, redeemed, and saved untold millions of lives over the past couple of thousand years. He is the true savior. He doesn’t just patch things up. He makes them new. “To those who are in Christ Jesus, they are new creations, old things have passed away, but behold all things are made new in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
So many people miss ‘REAL RELATIONSHIP’ with Jesus because they only consider him a duct tape like fix. They then, shake their fist at God and claim that He failed them or let them down or didn’t come through for them. They can’t understand why God would ‘say’ He loves them and then not bail them out when they are in a jam. Could it be that God will not allow Himself to be treated like duct tape to be reached for in a time of crisis but not honored as Lord as well as savior? Something to think about….
