How to become a Christian
Becoming a Christian is a very serious decision and not to be taken lightly. In one sense it is as easy as saying a prayer but at the same time this prayer means absolutely nothing if the person praying is just parroting words with no real understanding of what is being said or a true heart connection to the Lord.
If you have been; reading your Bible, talking with a friend about Christianity, reading the materials available on this website or in some other way become seriously aware of your need for Christ’s forgiveness and cleansing and are prepared to become a follower of Jesus, the invitation of Jesus is certainly open for you to enter into the family of God.
Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door (of your heart) and knock. If anyone hears and opens the door, I will enter (their heart) and will have fellowship with them and they with me. (Revelation 3:20) If God has been speaking to your heart and you know down inside that the message of the Gospel is true- DON’T PUT IT OFF. ‘NOW is the accepted time, TODAY is the day of salvation. (2 Corinthians 6:2)
The Roman’s Road to Salvation
The following is what is called, “The Roman’s Road to Salvation”. It is called this because all of the scripture verses come from the Book of Romans in the New Testament. The scriptures, when taken together, tell all of the key concepts of essential Christianity. This is what is called ‘The Gospel’ or ‘Good News’ of Jesus. Read these scriptures and make sure you understand these key concepts. IF and only IF you agree with God in these matters as His word is presented, you should then pray in a manner described at the end and simply tell the Lord that you agree with Him and want to receive His free gift of salvation today.
Key Concept 1: All have sinned and need God’s salvation
Romans 3:10- ‘As it is written there is none righteous, no, not one.’ Romans 3:23- ‘For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.’
When we compare ourselves to others we may not think we are so bad. We may even think we are pretty good. But when we compare ourselves to God’s standard of heaven (being just like Jesus) we ALL fall way short of the target.
Key Concept 2: The penalty for sin is death (eternal separation from God)
Romans 5:12- ‘Whereas sin entered into humanity through one man (Adam), and death came in through sin, and in this way death came to all men because all have sinned.’ Romans 6:23- ‘For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.’
Sin entered humanity back in the garden of Eden when mankind declared independence from God. They chose to ‘be gods’ themselves. They decided it would be better to make their own decisions of what is right and wrong and good and bad as they saw fit- apart from the Lord's direction. God let them have their way but the result was being ‘cut off’ from relationship with God.
Key Concept 3: Jesus paid the death penalty for our sin
Romans 5:8- ‘But God demonstrated His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.’
Jesus did not wait for us to make ourselves perfect before he died for us. He died for us while we were still in effect His enemies. We were on the other side of mankind’s war of independence from God. God wanted to forgive us and bring us back to right relationship with Himself but God cannot simply forgive sin and not punish it. His justice demands that the law must be upheld. In Jesus, He was able to bring the awful punishment that sin deserves, but at the same time be merciful and forgiving to those who seek His forgiveness.
Key Concept 4: Salvation through Faith in Christ
Romans 10:9,10- ‘That if you confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you SHALL be saved. For it is with your heart you believe and are justified and with your mouth you confess and are saved.’ Romans 10:13- For EVERYONE who calls on the name of the Lord (Jesus) SHALL be saved.
Confessing our need is the key. It expresses a heart attitude that communicates that we realize we need to BE saved and that we cannot save ourselves. We are not saved because we are nice people. We are not saved because our good outweighs our bad. We are saved because Jesus paid our ‘sin debt’ on our behalf. When we open our mouth and express to God our dependence on Him for our salvation it is the opposite of what Adam and Eve did by declaring ‘independence’ from God. We are acknowledging that what Jesus did on the cross was not merely for the sins of the world ‘in general’ but for MY sins individually as well.
Jesus died, but he also rose from the grave after three days victorious over death and hell. When we put our trust in His work on the cross for us individually, His death is applied to OUR account. We are choosing to ‘opt out’ of mankind’s declaration of independence ‘from God’ and choose rather to live forever IN God’ like a branch that had been cut off but was now grafted back in. We in effect died with Him because He died for us. He rose from death and we now live as born again children of God through His resurrection as well.
If you have read these scriptures and know in your heart that the message of salvation in Jesus Christ is the truth and you want the blood of Jesus applied to your account so that your sins will be forgiven and you can start new in a fresh and powerful relationship with God; I invite you to pray a receive Jesus into your heart as your Lord and savior right now. I have written a prayer below. You do not have to use these exact words. It is not a magical incantation where the words have to be just right. God is interested that you agree with His word and are willing to come to Him and receive the gift He has provided.
Whenever someone says, “I will worship God my own way”, or “My good will outweigh my bad” etc.; They are in effect spitting on the blood of Jesus and saying they have an alternative way of salvation that is just as good or better. This may sound good to some people but it is a great insult to God who provided THE ONLY way for us to be reconciled to Himself in keeping with His nature. He is Holy. He is a God of Justice as well as mercy.
If you would like to have the blood of Jesus be applied to you as an individual to pay the just penalty of your sin so He can be merciful and forgive your sin and bring you into His family as a born again child of God, pray like this;
“God, I know I am a sinner. I may have never killed someone or robbed a bank, but I know I am not worthy to enter heaven on my own merits. I have hated people in my heart and wished they were dead at times. You say that I am a murderer in my heart. I see your point and I see that you are right. My biggest sin though, is that I have been trying to live my life ignoring you or at best only wanting parts of your message on my own terms. I thank you for sending Jesus to pay the death penalty for MY sins and I ask that you would apply His precious blood to my account. Come into my life and be my Lord. Direct my life and show me how to live in a way that pleases you. Show me what areas of my life need to change and help me to live a life from this moment that pleases you. I believe that Jesus not only died on the cross but also rose again so that I too may live a new life by the power of His resurrection. From this day, I am a follower of Jesus and will live to please you in all things. Amen (Amen-means it is so or so be it)
If you have prayed this prayer or something similar and meant it with all your heart you can take God at His word and trust that you in fact ARE saved. You ARE born again. Read the scriptures above for concept #4 again. Do you see the words whoever and shall? These are underlined because they are emphatic promises.
You are saved, not because you read the Bible enough times or attended church enough times, or gave enough money to the poor, or any other ‘Religious’ thing that people do. You are saved because you have believed what God has already done and opened your heart to intentionally receive this gift as applied to your life personally.
Go to the place on the home page called ‘Effective Christian living’. Learn how to live a life that is victorious and powerful in Christ. Find a good church and plug-in to what God is doing there. See the section called ‘finding a good church’. May God richly bless you and make your life fruitful and effective in His service.
“To those who received Him (Jesus) and those who believed on His name (Jesus means savior/deliverer- also called Emmanuel or God with us) He gave the right (or power) to be called the sons and daughters of God. John 1:12 (paraphrased)
If you have done so, then that means- YOU.
